Time: 20:00

Venue: The Maltings, Farnham GU9 7QR

Electric Voices takes its first step into World Music with the BBC Radio 3 award-winning Polish group Warsaw Village Band. The line-up of six musicians who between them play violin, suka (a 16th century Polish fiddle), cello, hurdy gurdy, hammered dulcimer and various traditional Polish frame drums describe themselves as an inexhaustible source of fun, joy and spontaneity and have been described by Songlines as the Polish Pogues.

The band's musicians deliberately set out to explore Poland's musical traditions after the collapse of communism and for their most recent CD, Uprooting, they travelled throughout Poland to find and record the older musicians who still played the almost- forgotten styles of music. These ancient melodies were then interweaved with new songs and musical influences to introduce a thrilling, eager energy to
their performance that makes the band irresistible (to quote US magazine Sing Out's review of one of their concerts).

The are several videos of Warsaw Village Band on YouTube including this promotional video, this more sedate performance from Polish television and this amateur footage of the band performing in a market square (where they are joined on stage by a particularly enthusiastic fan!)
