The BATH ICIA season kicks off in February with the premiere of Fallen Fruit - now here, now gone a solo piece by performance-maker Katherina Radeva (Sat 11 Feb, 7.30pm). Katherina re-visits memories of growing up in her native Bulgaria before and after the fall of the Iron Curtain, and questions perceptions of freedom. Katherina also leads two workshops, one on theatre techniques including devising text and physicality (Sun 12 Feb, 11am-4.30pm), followed by a scenography - which includes set and costume design (Sat 18 Feb, 11am-4.30pm). ICIA New Season Announced: February to April 2012 ICIA, University of Bath, Bath BA2 7AY
ICIA, University of Bath, announces its new spring season of music, theatre, dance, visual arts, talks, film, workshops and classes. For the Olympic year, ICIA selects the theme of ‘internationalism’. The theme offers the opportunity to examine the relationship between national identity and internationalism in the cultures of sport and the arts . Highlights include the premiere of a new work by Bulgarian performer Katherina Radeva. In the run up to the Olympics, filmmaker Peter Anderson captures the progress of some of the elite athletes in training at the University. Musician, composer and artist Jem Finer launches Mobile Sinfonia, a global orchestra made up of mobile phone users, with specially composed ringtones, in conjunction with the Department of Computer Science.
The season also includes an extensive range of classes and weekend workshops in dance, visual arts and music, open to all, taking place at various venues on campus. The programme also includes a number of productions and concerts staged by University’s vibrant student societies.
Theatre & Dance

German born performer Silvia Rimat presents Imagine Us a playful piece in which Silvia observes passers-by on the University’s busy central parade and then addresses them via text projected onto a large screen (Thurs 16 Feb, 1pm). She returns later in the season to present I Guess If the Stage Exploded... which draws on what happens inside the brain when memories are created (Sat 28 Apr, 7.30pm). Silvia introduces memory tasks and techniques and applies them to the stage situation, hopefully training the audience to remember – forever.
Practice is one of a series of evenings offering a platform for testing new performance and dance in front of a live audience. Four specially selected performers and companies from across the UK present extracts of their work-in-progress, offering the chance to see new work in the making and offer feedback (Sat 25 Feb, 7.30pm). Practice is a partnership project with Salisbury Arts Centre.
Two Destination Language presents A Journey of a Home, a free one-on-one audio performance staged on the University’s central parade exploring themes of identity, border crossing and migration (Thu 22 March, 1pm-6pm). Taking participants on a voyage, the piece captures the moment when we look to the future and back at what we just left.
Music
Mobile Sinfonia is the result of artist, musician and composer Jem Finer’s year-long residency with the University’s Department of Computer Science. Jem is creating a global orchestra made up of mobile phone users, with specially composed ringtones for the public to download. Mobile Sinfonia is launched as part of Bath Digital Festival’s opening event at the Roman Baths (Thu 15 Mar, 6pm). Admission if free, but booking is essential.
As part of ICIA’s Rush Hour concert series Luke Turrell performs on Viola, accompanied by Lynn Carter on piano at American Museum in Bath’s Coach House, ten minutes walk from the University’s campus (Thu 19 Apr, 5.30pm). A rising figure in the European classical music world, Luke performs works by Hummel, Hindemith, de Sarasate and Brahms.
Exhibitions
As London 2012 approaches, ICIA presents work by artist Jo Longhurst which considers the human body in action and questions ideas of human perfection. A former gymnast herself, A-Z explores the gymnast in action and incorporates hundreds of editorial sports photographs from various archives, mounted on individual blocks along the gallery wall. Suspension (1) is a large-scale work specially printed for Art Space 2 (13 Feb-Fri 4 May). Jo discusses her work with Dr Lynne Turner (Goldsmiths, University of London) at an Artist's Talk (Wed 7 Mar, 7pm).
Peter Anderson, celebrated television director, filmmaker and visual artist, captures elite athletes in training for the Olympic and Paralympics at the University’s Sports Training Village. Throughout the residency Peter’s films will be presented on multi-screens in Art Space 3 (Wed 15 Feb – Fri 4 May). This projects will inform his dance film: On Your Marks 2, specially created to be screened on BBC Big Screens and other live screen sites in town and city centres across the south west during 2012.
As part of it s Artist’s Lecture series, the University presents a free illustrated talk by Peter Randall-Page who has an international reputation for his sculpture, drawings and prints (Thu 22 March, 5.30pm).
Film
Now considered a cult film classic, Koyaanisqatsi offers a powerful vision of contemporary life in industrialised countries, set against the hypnotic rhythms of an original score by Philip Glass (Fri 17 Feb, 6pm).
ICIA Classes and Workshops
ICIA offers a range of one-off workshops and weekly classes across art forms. Visual arts classes include Comic Book Art, Print-making, Drawing, Illustration, Painting, Portrait Studies, Landscape Painting, Life Drawing, Botanical Illustration, Digital Art and Photography. Workshops include Life Drawing Intensive with artist David Moxon (Sat 17 Mar, 10am-4pm) and Painting the Olympics with renowned artist and Professor of Art, Alan Cotton and Arts Educator Sadie Medway (Sat 28 Apr, 10am-4pm). Weekly dance and theatre classes are available in Contemporary Dance, Street Dance, Jazz Dance, Ballet and Acting & Performance Techniques. Workshops include a Theatre Workshop with Katherina Radeva (Sun 12 Feb, 11am -4.30pm) and Scenography (Sat 18 Feb, 11am-4.30pm). There is a screen-dance workshop with award winning dance artist and director Lisa May Thomas, Moving and Framing - Dance on Camera (Sat 18 Feb, 11am-4.30pm). Weekly classes in music cover DJ Skills, Samba Drumming and Sound Synthesis and Design. Peter Kubryk Townsend leads a one-off workshop in Jazz improvisation (Wed 15 Feb, 7.30-9.30pm).
Classes are open to all aged 16+, concessions available, and take place on campus. The new term starts from 6 February, enrolment opens from 16 January.
Student Productions and Events
Gravity Vomit presents their fourth annual juggling convention Bath UpChuck 2012 (Sat 25 Feb). Bath University Student Theatre presents the classic Arsenic & Old Lace (Thu 1-Sat 3 Mar, 7.30pm) followed by The Vagina Monologues (Thu 15-Sat 17 Mar, 7.30pm). Bath University Student Musicals Society produce the popular musical Fame (Wed 21-Sat 24 March, 7.30pm). The University of Bath & Photosoc’s annual Photography Exhibition displays a variety of winning entries and runners-up from this year’s competition (22 Mar to 15 Jun). Bath Malaysian and Singaporean Association BAMSA! Night is an action-packed feast of drama, music and dance (Sat 31 Mar, 7.30pm). The Afro-Caribbean Society’s Showcase includes diverse cultures from across Africa (Sat 10 Mar, 7pm). BodySoc’s Dancing Through the Decades takes audiences through a variety of popular dance styles (Thu 19-Sat 21 Apr, 7.30pm). Student Music includes the University of Bath Chamber Choir’s Spring Concert (Sat 24 Mar, 7.30pm) and the Choral & Orchestral Society’s Easter Concert (Sat 17 Mar, 7.30pm).
