In October 07, Rafiki Jazz released their debut EP –Big Muzik from Over There featuring 5 tracks recorded live at Sheffield’s Yellow Arch Studios. Having toured around the Yorkshire region earlier in the year, this is a special ‘one off’ Sheffield gig not to be missed.
The band’s Friday night gig is already sold out and with only 100 tickets for the Saturday night at the Shakespeare Hotel (off West Bar) it will be wise to book tickets in advance.
Rafiki Jazz features the fiery Swahili taarab singing of Mim Suleiman alongside the liquid vocals of Sheffield bossa-jazz singer Rosie Brown & newcomer Vanessa Chutturghoon’s sultry creole stylings. This unique frontline vocal trio is driven along by the big dancing sounds of a truly cross-cultural virtuoso rhythm section, featuring the acclaimed Senegalese kora player Kadialy Kouyate and Zimbabwe’s ex-Bhundu Boy Kudaushe Matimbah on traditional marimba, plus the intense sounds of Caribbean steel pans, Indian tabla & Brazilian percussion undercut with some deep roots electric bass frequencies. The Rafikian sound comprehensively raids the global dance chest, bringing hi-life, rumba, bossa & beyond into the mix at The Shakespeare, one of Sheffield’s most intimate live music venues.
Rafiki Jazz will be joined on Saturday by DJ Andy Healey from Africabeat, Sheffield Live! 93.2FM who promises ‘great African music to move your body and soul’.
