Thanks to Jeff Boss for recommending GondwanaSound's mix of global roots and grooves which led to an evening, djaying the warm up session for Nitin Sawnhey at Sheffield's leadmill.
Some advice was given:
" You know its going to be an older audience"
" Keep it intellectual"
" You know its predominantly asian music, you can play what you want but no banging sounds and make sure it doesn't get too loud"
" Just play the music you play best man.."
An older audience is fine, you're talking to someone who now has to take their glasses off to read sleeve notes and the writing on the mixing deck controls! I assumed an intellectual set would be about the music played rather than the process of choosing and decided at this stage not to play "off piste" otherwise the set could be a disaster, at least if they don't like me, they don't like me for the music not my dj skills.
As it was a warm up, I decided it would be safe to include a little hip wiggling opportunity or two whilst being mindful of complimenting not duplicating the music of Nitin Sawnhey.
So, here is the list of tracks I played, no pitch pending or beat mixing, no cheating, keeping it mainly rootsy with hopefully plenty of groovy.
1. Mercan Dede - The Sun Rises in the East
2. Lee Scratch Perry - Exercising
3. Le Grand Orchestre Du Comptoir de Marrakech - Atlas Blues.
4. Ganga Fusion - Moussaoui
5. U-Cef - Rachid Taha's Ya Rayah
6. Akli D - Tabrats ( Le Message)
7. Rachid Taha - Ecoute Moi Camarade
8. Emmanuel Jal - Elengwen
9. Bole 2 Harlem - Bole 2 Harlem
10. Dub Colossus - Azmari Dub
11. Bole 2 Harlem - Ensaralen Gojo
12. Mamani Keita - Lado ( K-Mille Remix)
13. Amadou & Mariam - Sabali
14. Laye Sow - Papa
15. Juan Canizares & Papa Wemba - Shadow
16. Mitsou - Lei Toi
17. Orange Blossom - Maldito
18. Aziz - Anti Geroi
19. Broadcaster - England
After the terrific set from Nitin Sawnhey and his band I was asked to carry on whilst Nitin signed cd's and they waited for the late night djay to arive. So just like cd's when they first appeared in the music shops, here's the bonus tracks
20. Juan Canizares & Papa Wemba - Shadow
21. Papa Wembe - Yolele
22. Les Amazones de Guinea - Wamato
23. Nuru Kane - Cigil
24. Orchestra Poly Rythmo - Its a Vanity...
Then the night djay came up and said I hate following on from your crowd, are you on tour with the band. What a cool compliment!
