Melstar’s greatest love has always been music, particularly international Hip Hop. It’s a special passion that truly started when she stumbled upon Cut Killer’s ‘Operation Freestyle’ in a French hypermarket at the age of thirteen. To this day ‘Operation Freestyle’ remains one of her favourite albums.
Melstar relocated to Paris in the late nineties - in search of the best France could offer her by way of rap, rhythm, and flow. She immersed herself in all that was Hip Hop – attending underground gigs by the likes of Saian Supa Crew, and scoping out record shops and venues for the freshest sounds. It was at this point that she soon became inundated with requests for mix tapes and cassettes. In the halls where she lived, people and friends often gravitated towards the sounds of Hip Hop and verse emanating from her bedroom studio.
Melstar continued to work and travel taking her tunes with her wherever she went. Eventually she arrived in Sheffield. The lady dj approached Sheffield Live! FM where she created, produced, and presented the UNHH – United Nations of Hip Hop show. She wanted to share her passion for global Hip Hop with the world, and to represent artists that struggled to be heard. UNHH established a great fan base and Melstar went on to record interviews with global artists and emcees for the show.
In Sheffield she put on UNHH nights - live global Hip Hop nights incorporating local and international emcees and d.j’s. Melstar also collaborated with both ‘Quoi de Neuf’ and Gondwanasound on nights of Hip Hop and global roots and grooves in Sheffield.
Melstar also has a passion for spoken word, she writes poetry, and has performed at ‘Words Aloud.’ You can hear Melstar’s emcee spoken word on her recorded tracks on her MySpace – www.myspace.com/mcmelstar. Melstar continues to search the world for international Hip Hop, and represent! Recent travels have taken her to Brazil; she hopes to visit West Africa soon. One thing is for sure wherever you’ll find international Hip Hop, you’ll find Melstar!
