Nneka
No Longer at Ease

[Review] Yo Mama Recordings B001BYJXFW

MC Melstar takes an emotional journey with Nneka. Bold, beautiful, and empowered. Nneka’s follow up album, No Longer at Ease, goes deeper and deeper – so deep that it stirs all your emotions from an initial exhilarating rush to searing empathetic pain. A very poignant title – at ease is something you won’t be. The rhythm, flow and melody wrapped together in this album is Nneka’s heart on her sleeve, Nneka's herstory.

The album blends her vision, experience and roots. Whilst her personal journey may have been dominated by a struggle with displacement and alienation the resulting message in the album is one of reconciliation and self belief. She is the force, a real force. Nneka took to the Siam stage at WOMAD this year and demonstrated her true sincerity and willingness to impart. Her live performance brought the audience to rapture with her words alone.

No Longer At Ease, proves her creativity wth tracks that will surely become absolute classics that will go down in history. Musically there are fusions of styles from Hip Hop to Afro beat and Afro pop that she makes her own, putting the full weight in the punch of her delivery and her verse. Her voice is so versatile ranging from defiant rap flow to soul sung with an emotional depth that it stops you in your tracks, totally arresting.

Contained within the album are biographical tracks like ‘Halfcast’ that tell of her personal pain of survival an expression of her inner struggle, exposing her vulnerability. Yet the album also works on our own emotions as a listener with tracks that resonate with words from a soul mate who has expressed what we know and feel with such poetic articulation. ‘Streets Lack Love’ is an anthem that will make you sing along with it’s catchy hook. Personal favourites of mine include ‘Walking,’ ‘Suffri,’ and ‘Focus.’ She is a voice of the future, a visionary – well read, knowledgeable, and sure. Listening to “No Longer At Ease” is an album to be experienced.

In a recent interview I asked her what we could expect from her album. The reply was, "the Truth".
