Love Music Hate Racism Hull day festival

[event]

Date(s): 29th November 2009

Time: noon until 5pm then 7pm until 11pm

Venue: Hull City Town Hall

The third annual Love Music Hate Racism Christmas and Winter show in Hull pulls together six of the best, something for everyone, the most exciting best-value cutting-edge music line up the city has seen since, well, the last one. From rock’n’roll danger to banging beats’n’bass, jaw-dropping ice-cool soulful pop to classic skankin’ 2Tone and dub, we challenge you to find an excuse not spend a measly fiver on this lot – and it’s all in aid of the vital vital fight against racism and division, in a region where the BNP gained an MEP in June.

Kano
The East London MC stood out from the grime crowd from the first bar of debut single “Boys and Girls”. Kane pioneered the now in-vogue move by many former grime and “urban” artists to the pop mainstream while never losing his cred, across a slew of brilliant single like “Ps and Qs”, “Typical Me”, “Nite Nite”, “Brown Eyes”, “This is The Girl” and “Hustler”, collaborating with The Streets, Damon Albarn, Craig David, Vybe Kartel and Chase & Status. Catchy new tune “Rock n Rolla” looks set to add to his army of fans. A more than worthy headliner to top a great LMHR night of music in Hull. www.ka-no.com www.myspace.com/kanorecordings

Trojan Sound System

Carrying the name of Jamaica’s most celebrated label is a big responsibility, but London’s Trojan Sound System carry it off with ease with their slogan of “Reggae Music for ALL the People”. Celebrating the label that hosted Bob Marley & The Wailers, Lee Perry, Sly & Robbie, Dennis Brown, Toots & The Maytals and many more, the TSS live show will make you physically unable to sit down! Vocalists Chuck Banton and Superfour have for more than 20 years been recognised among the cream of UK reggae talent, working with Gregory Isaacs, Lee Perry, Tippa Irie, Cutty Ranks and Horace Andy to name but a few. Unmissable. www.myspace.com/trojansoundsystem www.trojan-records.com

The Chapman Family
The buzz around Stockton-on-Tees’ Chapman Family has been building and building right up to this month’s Artrocker magazine front cover and brilliant new single ‘Virgins’. The Chapmans have perhaps lazily been compared with the likes of Joy Division (the sinister guitars), Editors (gothy majestic gloom) and Maximo Park (pop hooks) but their highly-energetic live shows are the best place to witness for yourself their edgy and original post-punk songs.

Tinie Tempah
In a year which the former underground grime sound has gone pop and hit the charts, Tinie Tempah is widely feted as the next big thing. Currently touring the UK with N-Dubz the versatile East London emcee has already worked with some of the top names in the game from M.I.A. to Jay Sean, Ironik and Wiley. www.myspace.com/tinietempah

Lykez
"Set to follow Dizzee Rascal and Wiley into the big leagues" - Dazed & Confused
"Looks like the album is going to be one of the biggest things to come from UK shores in 2009" Tricksta, UK Runnings & HHBRadio.com

At 18 years old Lykez, from Finsbury Park, has already been writing, recording and performing for six years. In 2005 she went to Atlanta with London Urban Collective, recorded with Malachi of The Dungeon Family and showcased for Big Boi's Purple Ribbon label. With her debut album, Lykez, Camera, Action! recorded and a full band rehearsed 2010 is going to be her year! www.lykez.com
