No album of the week as we look at the European World Music charts.
Welcome to your GondwanaSound weekly round the world music adventure. First of all, before we talk about the music, this programme was pre-recorded so although it was broadcast on the morning that the news of the devastating earthquake in Haiti broke around the world, at the time of recording we were unaware of what lie ahead. You can donate to the Disasters Emergency Appeal here.
Due to being snowed in again at GondwanaTowers we experiment with some new technology plus old favourites, string, blue tack and bits of wire, to pre-record the show. With so much music and such little time we couldn't afford to waste another week.
As it was the first broadcast of the month we take a look at the European World Music Charts, playing some key tracks as we go. With the weather being so cold and gloomy I couldn't resist starting the broadcast with the hot tropical vibe of Les Leopards.
London anti capitalists, Peyoti for President begin their presidential campaign to be number one in the charts and we pick a track from their album Rising Tide of Conformity. We were first introduced to the Danish band Valravn by Chris Nickson when he came to present a Danish special here on GondwanaSound. Enjoy the atmosphere and the drama as the track, Koder Pa Snor unfolds.
Jane Cornwell has been busy down under and her recent compilation for the Nascente label, Aboriginal Soul enters the charts, we pick an enchanting track from five member girl pop group Wildflower. Newcomer, Kotterashky from Bulgaria, sits alongside retro Ghanaian funksters The Sweet Talks and they all rub shoulders with international artists, Cesaria Evora, Bassekou Kouyate and Ceu.
We continue to support the Amnesty International "Send a Message of Hope" greetings card campaign. This week we send greetings cards to both Journalist Pablo Pacheco Avila from Cuba and The Peace Community in Colombia.
Hope you hear something you enjoy you can buy all the cd's we're playing here and please share this link with friends.
