Album of the Week : Great Moments of Vinyl History compiled by Andy Kershaw.
Back from WOMAD 2008, not exactly fresh but totally exhilerated. Expect some recordings from WOMAD plus music from artists that appeared on the various stages. We start with some new releases from Vampisoul and World Circuit. Our album of the week comes form 1988, Andy Kershaw's compilation Great Moments in Vinyl History.
I chose the album of the week too keep the WOMAD theme going. Andy Kershaw always used to do a "set" at WOMAD, somewhere in the arena with portable cd players and a box or two of cd's and usually dropping a Toots and the Maytals track into the mix. It keeps the WOMAD theme going along with the 1988 theme and the news article I posted last week.
As I mentioned in the broadcast there's a stonking South African sax jive from Makonga Tsohle Band, some rockabilly, a Kentucky mining song, contributions from SE Rogie and Kathryn Tickell but the tracks I chose were ones that demonstrate Andy's passion for all types of music and his ability to always seemingly have some kind of professional device to record those special musical moments for posterity. An inspiration to take the Edirol to some of the famed Sheffield Folk sessions and yes......to dig out the tapes I made from his radio shows....yes I was one of those unrepentant home tapers, I still have my tape splicing kit.
Oh how easy things are with podcasts, iTunes and eMusic now.
found a German website selling a copy for €5, well worth the money, perhaps it may get re-issued one day.
