A double cd packed of 23 tracks from artists, many of whom are at the start of their musical careers. This comes less than a year after the First Folk rising, a single cd and serves to demonstrate the strength of the new generation folk scene here in the UK.
" In all my years of running folk clubs, booking festivals and listening to the music we call folk, I can't remember a time when there was such an abundance of exciting, young and genuine talent" Alan Bearman echoed by Colin Irwin in the sleeve notes: "They say youth is wasted on the young. Not in this case."
I hope that people can get past the cheap and rather nasty looking cd cover because if like me you can't get round to all the folk festivals, this compilation is excellent way to make some new aquaintences and uncover some real gems.
There are the more familiar names of Last Orders, Young Folk Award Winners 2007 wo handed the crown to Jeana Leslie & Siobman Miller, in 2008, also with a track on the album. The compilation gave the opportunity to hear a Mawkin-Causley track, one band I have been desperate to see live but thus far things conspire to thwart my endevours. Their track is followed by cuts from Ruth Notman and Bella Hardy making a strong opening for the compilation.
Some enjoyable new discoveries for me have been Ember, Sam Carter, Ruth Theodore, Grant Campbell Jenna Reid (should have lisened to the First Folk Rising) and Rosie Doonan.
The compilation comes with a handy little booklet giving details of the tracks, their respective albums & labels alongside those all important, invaluable quotes from those in the know giving a little extra momentum.
All in all an excellent compilation, which kept my interest going to the end and will undoubtedly keep the Proper Distribution machine busy for months to come.
