11th July 2009 :
Etran Finitawa and The Hut People double bill, Glossop

[event]

Etran Finatawa’s musicians come from Niger which is one of the three poorest countries in the world, it is a landlocked country in West Africa bordered by Mali, Algeria, Libya, Chad and Nigeria. Niger has a very rich cultural heritage and sits at a desert crossroads between the Berber and Arab cultures of the North and the many sub-Saharan cultures of the South.

Supporting them for the Glossop date are Hull's Hut People, with a penchant for peoples photos of huts, Gary and Sam combine percussion and accordian with amazing results.

Album of the week : Victor Deme on Chapa Blues

There seems to be a theme of guitars, sand dunes and pipes as in bagpipes not sea waves. Returning form a holiday in the Border region of Northumberland we kick off with some regional tunes. we follow the sand dunes of Northumberland to Niger and link guitars around the world.
WE also fit in music that will help pay and secure sanitation for one person from Africa for their entire life, there's a tribute to Fela Kuti born this day 1938 andfinally we squeeze in a bit of the Flying Chilli podcast form Alex Stewart.
