Composer, producer, performer, film score writer and humanitarian, and a legendary figure in African music, Manu Dibango here pays homage to the sound of New Orleans and his hero Sidney Bechet. This album, originally out in 2007, is the sound of a superb musician in the company of friends, kicking back and thoroughly enjoying himself Dibango arranged the Bechet originals for tuba, vibes, piano, drums and alto sax.
Adrian Phillips has a listen to not one but two new releases by Baka Beyond and aserts that western artists like Peter Gabriel, One Giant Leap and Simon ‘Afro-Celt’ Emerson have often used original field recordings as the basis for many a finished track, but never have they released them in their own right - cue a flood of emails to the contrary.
Cameroonian singer, songwriter, guitarist, percussionist Blick Bassy connects the music of Central and West Africa and mixes it with bossa nova, jazz and soul. His guitar playing and his intoxicating, warm voice are enriched by the kora, calabash and a double bass resulting in a unique, haunting sound which is velvety with subtle harmonies, yet also raw with groovy rhythms.
